Kaput!! (More Bad News)

Just when I thought things couldn’t get any worse in my world, they just did! My laptop completely crashed again today. It was utterly kaput, defunct, expired, deceased, and needing more than the kiss of life to revive it. I lost everything; all my work and all my open tabs again, where I had stored all my blogging friends’ valuable posts and more besides. This happened to me a few days ago, although not on such a large scale as today. I’m past the stage of crying now, and if I could let myself go, I would scream very loudly.

Last time, my techie guy came to try to reset my laptop. Today, he had to come back again and was here for over two hours, having to reinstall everything. He charges £45 ($57) per hour. Today’s fee was nearly £100!! Added to that was the fee for coming out last Monday, which was a Bank Holiday. The total came to £175 ($221).

To add to all my despair, I had a tooth taken out this morning. It was an unexpectedly complicated extraction (more about that tomorrow). I was in the dentist’s chair for forty minutes, having had six injections to properly numb my mouth. I had to pay to go privately, as my regular NHS dentist couldn’t extract my tooth because I have a pre-existing condition, which makes having teeth out a risk. In the end, after much pulling, pushing and tugging, I ended up with three stitches.

When the anaesthetic started to wear off, I was in agony. I had strict instructions to just sip water and not to eat anything solid, not that I’m hungry anyway. I still feel quite traumatised and exhausted from the whole procedure. Tomorrow, I can eat soft food and drink warm drinks – whoopie doo!! The cost of my extraction, strong painkillers and antibiotics came to £500 ($632). Add that to the laptop repair, and it totals over £600 ($760)!! It looks like I won’t be getting much shopping this week. Just as well, my appetite has disappeared.

So … here I am again, begging for forgiveness for losing all your recent posts. Honestly, right now, I feel like throwing in the towel, but I know if I did that, I would only regret it. I so wanted to catch up on your blogs, but it looks like it’s not meant to be.

I’m absolutely shattered now, so will head on up to bed in the hope that a good night’s sleep and more painkillers will help me to feel better in the morning. I really do hope so – it’s been a day and a half today!

I believe that you can never do a kindness too soon and should give credit where credit is due. A smile or a kind word could make the difference between a good or bad day for a person - we never know what's going on for another soul. 1. Yikes 😱 that is a bad day. The worst is over so have a relaxing evening (salt water gargle for the tooth will help though don’t swallow) with some warm tea will sooth what ails this day. Take care as a new day will bring new hope.

    1. Thanks very much for your understanding and advice, Cathy. I have to do salt water mouth washes four times a day. I will try some warm tea later, too. I still feel quite traumatised from my tooth extraction and have loads to do to sort out my repaired laptop. Thank you for your good hopes for today. Xx 🥰

    1. Thank you, Granny. I feel pretty rough this morning and the numbess hasn’t worn off, so I can’t feel my chin or lip. I phoned an emergency dentist who said there might be nerve damage. She couldn’t say whether it would ever get better, though! Just my luck. Love you, too, my friend. Xxx 💝

  2. Well, I love the photo you found to accompany your post. Sorry about your laptop and your tooth and the money. I’m most sorry about the tooth. It’s something of a fear of mine to start losing teeth. Mine are pretty brutalized from Tourette syndrome. At one point I couldn’t stop gnashing them for months. I can’t believe they didn’t break off. I hope you get your laptop sorted out quickly. Susan and I have had nothing but trouble with the new laptops we bought a year ago. They’ve both been back to the factory for repairs. My warranty is up now and it really isn’t working well. I think we got taken.

    1. Thank you very much, Jeff. I’ve always felt the same about losing teeth. I’ve lost more than I’d like to admit to. My teeth have always been a problem due to having had malnutrition as a child, and then, later, being anorexic for so many years. I now have a dental plate, which I hate and it makes eating quite a challenge at times. I’m glad your teeth are still in tact even though you were gnashing them a lot. I’m worried this morning because my lip and chin are still numb and I fear it might be nerve damage, which migh be permanent.

My laptop isn’t very old, either, but I’ve had lots of issues with it. My warranty expired about three months ago – isn’t that typical?

    1. Thank you so much, Jenn. Unfortunately, I just couldn’t sleep last night and am still in pain this morning. I’m also worried as the numbness hasn’t worn off and the dentist said it might be permanent nerve damage! My own dentist is closed until Tuesday because we have a bank holiday on Monday due to the Coronation of King Charles today. These things always happen at the weekend or bank holidays. Xx 🤗💖

  3. My dear friend, you just rest well and take care of you!! I am so sorry you are going through all this, but thankful that you are able to get a nights rest/sleep.
Much love and blessings for a speedy healing ❤️‍🩹 ✨

    1. Thank you so much, Pamelap. I couldn’t sleep last night as the pain was keeping me awake. I am exhausted today and may have a sleep this afternoon. Thank you for your love and blessings for healing. Xx 😘💖

  4. I’m not posting every week these days, so you have plenty of time to catch up on DLTDGB… although I should be posting a new episode this week. I’m sorry you’re going through all this… hang in there… I wish I had something more useful to say 😦

    1. It does feel like too much is going on at the moment. I do backup my work, but the tabs at the top of the screen have been lost; hence, I’ve lost many of my blooger’s recent posts. I saw that you shared a post about your mental health a few days ago. I was in the middle of reading it and wanted to comment. Please, could you send me a link for me to be able to find it again, as I really wanted to read it and offer you some support. Take care of yourself, my friend. Healing hug for you 🤗.

  5. I have suffered through severe losses, and have observed that sometimes an absolute clean slate, a fresh start is exactly what is needed for moving forward to the next step in my life. I hope your fresh start will bring you many blessings!

    1. I’m sorry you’ve had so many severe losses, Tamara. I do know that feeling. The annoying thing is that losing all my tabs for my blogging friends’ posts is simply a technical fault, as opposed to an actual loss. Perhaps, a fresh start might be the right thing to happen right now, as you say. Thank you for your kind words and blessings, my friend. Xx 🤍

      1. Thank you! I try to remember that there are flowers among the thorns!

  6. Dear Ellie. What a hard week you have had. It seems when a week develops a tendency for disaster they pile up. The computer dying is a very difficult and unfortunately regular occurrence. The dental work, I can so relate to. I hope you are feeling better soon. I will focus positive energy your way and wish you much better times. If I lived closer I would stop by and try to cheer you up. Here is a great big virtual hug. Take a deep breath and take care. Your friend, Allie.

    1. Thank you for your beautiful and kind words, sweet Allie. I still feel pretty rough this morning and am concerned thatt the numbness hasn’t worn off yet, which isn’t right. I fear the nerves have been damaged when the dentist had to cut through the gum. Thank you so much for your positive energy coming my way, too. How lovely of you to say you would come and cheer me up if we lived nearer to each other. That would be a really special thing to do. I’m trying to remember to breathe. I might have a sleep this afternoon, as I still feel exhausted. Much love to you, my dear friend. Xx 😘💖

  7. It’s very bad, your laptop again crashed. Good you share your
stored bloging friends valueable posts .
How you teeth pain?. I hope it’s better now.
    Tack care 😘

    1. Thank you, Rajkkhoja. I have lost so many of my blogging friends’ posts, so am very sad. My tooth and gum is still very painful – I think it will take a few days to start to settle down. Xx 🥰

    1. Thank you very much, J. I feel completely wiped out this morning. My mouth is still numb, too, which is worrying as it should have worn off well before now. The dentist is closed until Tuesday as Monday is a Bank Holiday because of the Coronation 💙💛💙💛💙💛💙

      1. Have you tried gargling with salt water? (1 tsp of salt in warm water. Repeat every hour as nedessary.) Do not rinse your mouth afterwards unless you really hate the taste.
        🤎💜💙🤎💜💙🤍💙💜🤎💙💜🤎

        1. Yes, I have; I had strict instructions from the dentist yesterday to rinse my mouth with warm saltwater after everything I eat for at least a week. Not that I feel much like eating as it’s all still very sore. 💜💚💙💛💙💚💜

          1. Don’t just do it after eating. As long as you have pain in your mouth it should help with that. Or at least it does for me.

    1. Thank you, Mick. I think your words, ‘Gorden Bennet, ‘ sums up how I feel. I’m still exhausted today, and I’m worried about the numbness not having worn off and fear it might be nerve damage from where the dentist had to cut through the gum. As for my laptop, my techie guy had to remove and reinstall Windows and also replace the internal Wi-Fi card. He was here for a long time trying to sort it all out, hence the high cost. X

        1. Unfortunately, I don’t think so, as there are still things that aren’t there that should be, and other things that are missing. My tech. man said to make a list of anything that needs to be corrected or is missing, and he might be able to sort it out remotely, which will cost less, but, nevertheless, will be more than I can really afford. Technology … don’t you just love it 🙄!!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and understanding, Maggie. I’m not feeling too great today; very sore and achy and still exhausted. I might go up for a short nap this afternoon. The complete numbness hasn’t worn off yet, which I know it should have done by now. I am very worried that it’s nerve damage from where the dentist had to cut my gum. That’s all I need. Big hugs for you, also Xxx 🤗🥰🤗

    1. Thank you, David. I appreciate your thoughtfulness. Sorry, I’ve missed your recent posts. I’ve lost so many of all my blogging friends’ posts with my laptop breaking down. I’m trying to play catch-up where I can now. I hope you are well.

  8. So Sorry to hear about your computer crash!! Usually, it is possible to save and recover all of the data on your hard drive. In the U.S. We have the Geek Squad (part of Best Buy) that you can subscribe to that will completely cover your desktop/laptop. This best thing to do is to try and get your Techie to get an external hard drive backup of your entire computer. This way you will save all your work, poems and writings, photos etc. Unless you can get your current computer back up and running it will be hard to get your browser pages back, but it may be possible to do if you get a new computer, sounds like you may need one???? The Support people for Google, Edge, Yahoo and others may be able to help you recover your browsing history. Might be possible. A lesson learned the hard way. Always backup your work and what is important to you on an external hard drive or Google Drive (but they don’t guarantee your data). So sorry, My Dear! 😊💕💕🌹

    1. Thanks for all your good advice, Chuck. My techie man spent hours fixing my laptop yesterday, but there are still things missing that I need to download again and other bits and pieces. I have got an external harddrive now, so will back up everything regularly from now. The problem was that I had loads of tabs open at the top of the screen, each one had a different blogger’s post on it. I get so behind, that the posts get backed up (I think I probably follow more people than I can manage but don’t want to drop anyone as I enjoy reading everyone’s posts). I just need 48 hours in a day, and then, I’d be fine! I can only store the tabs when using and restarting my laptop, but if the laptop crashes completely like it did, I lose the lot. I do use online versions of Google Sheets instead of Excel and sometimes Google Docs instead of Word, as these save automatically as I work. Thanks for your advice and sympathy. It’s much appreciated. 🌷💕🌹

      1. I like to save follower posts too. Here is what I do. If you copy the URL of the post you can then paste it in Word or Google Docs and then you don’t have to keep the tab on the brower active and can close it. I have also found that if you find something that is really great – I keep a monthly “Word Bank” and copy the URL and they post the actual verses because I have found that sometimes the URL in WP goes inactive or is closed. This way you permanently save the text!

Also, is you set the settings properly – your tech guy can do this on the browsers you use to restart closed brower pages. Then when you reopen that browser it will prompt you and ask if you want to restore the browser pages and poof, you are back in business.
        😊😁💕💕🌹

        1. Thanks very much for your advice and tips, Chuck. They’re very helpful. I will have a go at that. Usually, I can save open tabs and restart them as you say if I have a problem and lose them. However, this time, my techie man had to remove and reinstall Windows 10, so I had to start again with programming my task bar and start menu plus many other things. Because of having to replace Windows completely, I lost everything. Now I have a new version of Windows, I hope it won’t happen again. My tech. man said it was a software fault. Thanks again, Chuck. 😊🌹💕😊💕

  9. WordPress can also help you with your blog. They still keep your comments and follower replies than you would be able to recover on a new computer. When you get the old one fixed or a new one. Contact Customer support and help reassure you that your Worldpress “stuff” is still alive and safe! Chuck

    1. Thanks for telling me that, Chuck. I’m so far behind now that I wouldn’t be able to chase up all the blogs and comments I missed, as I’m now busy just trying to keep up with people’s current posts. I’ll bear in mind that WP support should be able to help if I have any further issues. Thanks again, Chuck. 🌹💕🌹

    1. Thank you very much, Margaret. I could really have done without the massive bill for both the laptop and the dental extraction yesterday, being on a limited income as I am. I’m still in pain with my gum being stitched, and I can’t eat solid food, so I’m mashing or liquidising everything at the moment. Yoghurt and vegan custard are good. Much love to you, also. Xx 💖

    1. Thank you, Tangie. That’s kind of you to say. I’m still in pain today and unable to eat anything other than custard, yoghurt, mashed bananas and warm soup. Hopefully, tomorrow, I will be feeling better. Xx 🌷💕

  10. Oh, no! That sounds simply terrible, Ellie! Your computer is giving you a terrible, horrible, no-good, really bad time. I hope you get it fixed up soon (fingers crossed).

    1. Thanks, Bridgette. It was a bit of a technical nightmare at that time. I did get it fixed in the end, but it cost me ‘an arm and a leg’ (I don’t know if you know that phrase over there). It seems to be working okay at the moment, thankfully. Xx 💖
